Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease. The soaring cases of whooping cough globally have sparked several concerns:

  Health impacts
For infants and young children
High risk of severe complications: Infants are particularly vulnerable. Whooping cough can cause apnea (temporary cessation of breathing), pneumonia, seizures, and in severe cases, it can be fatal. For example, in some developing regions where access to proper medical care is limited, the mortality rate among infants with whooping cough can be relatively high.
Impact on development: Repeated and severe coughing fits can interfere with an infant's normal eating and sleeping patterns, which may lead to malnutrition and delayed development.
For the elderly and immunocompromised individuals
Higher susceptibility to severe illness: These groups have weaker immune systems. When they contract whooping cough, they are more likely to experience complications such as bronchitis, and they may take longer to recover compared to healthy adults.

  Vaccine related concerns
Vaccine effectiveness and waning immunity
There are concerns about the long term effectiveness of whooping cough vaccines. Although vaccines have been highly successful in reducing the overall incidence of the disease, immunity can wane over time. For instance, some studies suggest that the protection provided by the pertussis vaccine may decrease significantly within 5 10 years after vaccination. This has led to an increased number of cases among adolescents and adults who were previously vaccinated as children.
Vaccine hesitancy
In some parts of the world, there is vaccine hesitancy due to misinformation about vaccine safety. Some parents may be reluctant to vaccinate their children against whooping cough, believing in unfounded rumors such as a link between vaccines and autism. This further contributes to the spread of the disease as the overall vaccination coverage decreases.

  Global spread and control
Increased international travel
With the growth of international travel, the risk of whooping cough spreading across borders has increased. An infected individual can easily travel to different countries and transmit the disease to others in crowded places like airplanes, airports, and tourist destinations. For example, during peak travel seasons, there is a higher likelihood of disease transmission between regions with different levels of whooping cough prevalence.
Resource limited regions
In some developing countries or regions with limited healthcare resources, it is challenging to implement large scale vaccination programs, conduct proper disease surveillance, and provide timely treatment. This lack of resources can lead to a higher burden of whooping cough cases and difficulties in controlling the spread of the disease.
