Steady progress seen in environment protection

Steady progress has been seen in environmental protection in many aspects:

  Air quality improvement
Reduction in pollutant emissions
   In many countries, strict regulations have been imposed on industries to control emissions of sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$), nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$), and particulate matter. For example, in China, the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan has led to a significant decrease in the emissions of these major air pollutants.
   The phasing out of coal fired boilers in urban areas and the promotion of clean energy sources for heating have contributed to better air quality.
Improvement in air quality indicators
   There has been a noticeable increase in the number of days with good air quality in many cities around the world. For instance, some previously severely polluted cities have seen a reduction in the frequency of heavy smog days. The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM5) has gradually decreased over time, which is beneficial to public health and the overall living environment.

  Water resource protection
Pollution control
   Strengthened sewage treatment. More and more cities are building and upgrading sewage treatment plants to improve the treatment capacity and efficiency of domestic and industrial sewage. For example, advanced treatment technologies such as membrane bioreactor (MBR) are being widely used to ensure that the discharged water meets higher environmental quality standards.
   Control of agricultural non point source pollution. Through measures such as promoting scientific fertilization and pesticide use reduction, the amount of nutrients and pesticides flowing into water bodies is being reduced.
Water body restoration
   Rivers and lakes are being restored. Projects are carried out to clean up riverbeds, remove silt, and restore riparian vegetation. For example, in some areas, the restoration of wetlands around lakes has improved the water purification function of water bodies and also provided habitats for many water loving plants and animals.

  Soil conservation and remediation
Soil erosion control
   Afforestation and grass planting programs are being carried out on a large scale in areas prone to soil erosion, such as mountainous areas and loess plateaus. The roots of trees and grasses can fix the soil, reducing the loss of soil due to wind and water erosion.
   Terracing in mountainous farming areas is also an effective measure to prevent soil from being washed away by rainwater.
Soil pollution remediation
   For contaminated industrial sites, remediation technologies such as soil washing, bioremediation, and phytoremediation are being explored and applied. In some cases, polluted soil is excavated and treated off site to ensure that the soil quality meets the requirements for subsequent land use.

  Biodiversity protection
Establishment of protected areas
   The number and area of nature reserves, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries are increasing. These protected areas provide safe habitats for a large number of wild plants and animals, protecting them from human over exploitation and habitat destruction.
   For example, the expansion of the Amazon rainforest protected areas helps protect countless unique species and the complex ecological systems there.
Species protection and recovery
   Endangered species are receiving special protection. Conservation programs for endangered animals such as pandas, tigers, and rhinos are being carried out through measures such as breeding in captivity and habitat restoration. At the same time, for some endangered plant species, seed banks are established and in situ protection measures are strengthened.
